Kanchenjunga Base Camp

18 Days

Overview

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a shorter, more direct version of the full Kanchenjunga Circuit, focused on reaching Pangpema, the North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain on earth. Rather than crossing the high passes to the South Base Camp as well, this trek follows the Tamor River and Ghunsa valley up to Pangpema and back the same way, making it a more time-efficient way to stand beneath Kanchenjunga while still passing through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area’s remote wilderness and Limbu and Rai villages. The journey begins with a flight to Bhadrapur followed by a drive to Taplejung, where the trail sets off along the Tamor River through Mitlung, Chirwa, and Sekathum before climbing through forest to Amjilosa, Gyabla, and the beautiful Limbu village of Ghunsa, the main acclimatization stop of the trek. From Ghunsa the trail continues to Khambachen and Lhonak, crossing increasingly glacial terrain before the final push to Pangpema at 5,143 metres, with close-up views of Kanchenjunga’s north face, Wedge Peak, and Jannu.
